Spring has officially sprung and we couldn’t be more excited about what this new season represents. Similar to the blank slate the New Year brings, spring brings feelings of hope and rebirth as the cold winter weather moves out and the planet appears to come back to life in blooms of beautiful and fragrant blossoms. And with these flowers comes the buzz of the ever-busy honey bee.
If you like to spend your time hanging out around our blog (and why would you not? It’s a pretty sweet place to be with the hottest honey trends, new honey products, and all the tasty honey recipes), you will know that honey bees are coming into the spring straight from the almond fields of California where they have been pollinating 80% of the world’s almond supply – and that is just the beginning of the pollination season! From California, honey bees move all across the country pollinating many of the fruits, vegetables and nuts that we enjoy all year long. Fun Fact: honey bees pollinate crops in all 50 states (check out this blog post to see some of their routes)!
So just how much pollination do honey bees do? Short answer – A LOT! Honey bees visit millions of blossoms in their lifetimes and are premier pollinators because they are available throughout the growing season and pollinate a wide range of crops. In fact, honey bees pollinate more than 90 different crops and are responsible for about one-third of the foods we eat. But it is so much more than just whole foods like the fruits and vegetables we know and love, honey bees also play a vital role in the production of meat and dairy, which depend on bees to pollinate livestock feed crops, like alfalfa.
